Acts 4:32–35

All the believers were united in heart and mind. And they felt that what they owned was not their own, so they shared everything they had.  The apostles testified powerfully to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and God’s great blessing was upon them all.  There were no needy people among them, because those who owned land or houses would sell them and bring the money to the apostles to give to those in need.

Devotion by Chris Shiver

Sounds like utopia.  What is really amazing is that they seemed to have made it work, but for how long?  Human history seems filled with similar attempts, but they usually broke down in the long run because those in leadership positions started taking advantage of everyone else’s generosity, leading to inequality and oppression.  But God still wants us to try.  In prayer and communication with God I have come to understand that I should care for my family, but that I also must share the resources God has granted me, and not just out of the abundance.  And ultimately I must trust God that what I release control of will ultimately serve to further the Kindom.

My Prayer:

Jesus, I pray that each day I will understand more fully that what I release control of to you will probably end up being utilized more wisely than what I insist on controlling myself.  Amen.
