1 John 5:3–6

For the love of God is this, that we obey his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome, for whatever is born of God conquers the world. And this is the victory that conquers the world, our faith. Who is it that conquers the world but the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?
This is the one who came by water and blood, Jesus Christ, not with the water only but with the water and the blood. And the Spirit is the one that testifies, for the Spirit is the truth.

Reflection by Janet Derby
Some Scriptures remind us that it all comes down to simple actions – love for each other and faith that the love of God and obedience to God’s commandments will ultimately triumph. The Pilgrimage book club just read Love Wins: The Lovers and Lawyers Who Fought the Landmark Case for Marriage Equality, the story of the individuals involved in the Supreme Court case which resulted in the legalization of gay marriage. It was an interesting look at the personalities of those who, despite personal hardships and adversity, continued to fight for what they believed in, for themselves and for others. The attorney, Al Gerhardstein, has spent his career advocating for civil rights and fighting for justice for the causes he believes in, often with little or delayed compensation, at times receiving hate mail. He, and others in the book, are wonderful examples of those who can, and have, conquered the world through love. We should be inspired and strive to do the same.

Faithful God,

Thank you for all those who have obeyed your commands and aided in conquering evil. Help us to stay true to those commands and spread your love in the world. Amen.
