John 15:9-11
“As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. 10 If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in his love. 11 I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.

During challenging times it seems hard to trust in the connection we have with God.  Things are too busy to connect.  Or an illness distracts us from connection.

We think we can take control and handle a crisis on our own disregarding God’s instructions to lay it all at his feet.

This passage reminds us that it’s all far simpler if we use God’s commandments as an anchor and return to them often. When we allow this practice in our lives the challenges are not so complicated and we don’t need to feel like we are in the cockpit steering the airplane into a dark cloud.

This week I had a big scary surgery. The anticipation was overwhelming. But somewhere along the week I saw that I couldn’t handle the fear myself. So I reached out and received some expert prayer help from a friend. After that I spent a lot of time submitting to God‘s will. Everything was out of my control. I just focused on loving my caretakers and being grateful for the gifts they had been given.  The joy of Jesus was not only within my reach, it was mine to share with others.  Which is why I shared my happy face toes with the hospital staff. It was my way of passing on the connection we all have with the complete joy he promises us.

Lord, today I am banged up but cancer free. Let me share your joy with others who are living in fear.  Amen.
