Psalm 23

A Psalm of David.
The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.
He makes me lie down in green pastures;
he leads me beside still waters;
he restores my soul.
He leads me in right paths
for his name’s sake.

Devotion by Julia Shiver

If you have been following the Lectionary and the devotions, then you know that I have deviated from the script today.  I just spent 5 days at my mom’s farm taking care of all the animals while mom and her wife were away.  I had just gone on the women’s retreat and wasn’t looking forward to missing another Sunday at church.  Too many exciting things going on!

It was, of course, exactly what I needed.  Days spent on one of the porches in the cool breeze either reading, coloring, or watching the birds from the many feeders.  The farm is in a valley at the base of Lavender Mountain near Rome.  Several creeks run through the property.  I took care of the horses, the chickens, the dogs, and the cats.  The valley is a beautiful shade of green, the pastures reaching into the woodlands.  I drank cool, clean water from the well.  I tossed out hay for the horses and braved the chickens looking for fresh eggs.  I walked out to the African-American chapel and school house that mom and Annie restored.

I thoroughly enjoyed the women’s retreat.  Lots of meaningful spiritual connections as well as lots of fun time with women I adore.  But the days alone, just me, God, and the glorious earth around me, have restored my soul.

Dear Creator God, Thank you for the green pastures, the cool waters, the sounds of animals, and the time away to be with you.  Amen.
