I John 3:1-2

See what love the Father has given us, that we should be called children of God; and that is what we are. The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him. Beloved, we are God’s children now; what we will be has not yet been revealed. What we do know is this: when he is revealed, we will be like him, for we will see him as he is.

Reflection by Janet Derby

For me, the knowledge that we are children of God is the most convincing image of God’s love for us. I understand that sadly, not everyone experiences the unconditional love of a parent. I was blessed to have done so and I certainly can attest to the overwhelming feeling of love for a child. We rejoice with our children in the good times and ache for them in their struggles. One of my sisters told me that for her, dealing with her own breast cancer was infinitely easier than dealing with her daughter’s cancer. I can absolutely understand that. To recognize that God cares for us in the same way is a great comfort.

Yet this passage takes it a step further and indicates that we even more will be revealed. In this week when we remember the saints who have gone before us, it is reassuring to know that our loved ones have been welcomed into the loving arms of a parental God.

Caring God, thank you for calling us your children and loving us persistently and unconditionally. Amen.
